All you needed to know about Recognition of Prior Learning or Trade testing of private candidates



Recognition of Prior Learning is the process by which prior learning is given a value. It is a means by which prior learning is formally identified, assessed and validated. The key terms associated with RPL are ‘prior’, i.e., learning already achieved; and ‘process’ i.e., the distinct stages of identification, assessment and certification.



The RPL/TRADE TEST services are for the individuals who possess the experience and skill but do not have relevant formal qualification and wishes to get the recognition for the experience and skills



It saves time and gives flexibility
There is no need to attend the normal classes
There is no need to resigned from work
The training will only be for the occupational areas where the candidates need a further intervention to gain qualification.



The RPL/TRADE TEST application forms can be access in the NTA website or any Vocational Training Centre across the country. The application forms can also be obtained at the NTA offices



The RPL/TRADE TEST services are provided at the accredited Vocational Education and Training providers across the country, and further information can be obtained from them as well. The NTA head office can also be visited by those who may need further information and wish to apply.



6. 1 The individual complete the application forms accompanied by the relevant documentation and submit the application forms to the VTCs or NTA
6. 2 The application forms are evaluated and the candidate will be invited to the induction meeting where he or she will be taken through the RPL/TRADE TEST mentorship process.
6. 3 The Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) will be issued to the candidate during the induction meeting.
6. 4 The candidates will be requested to provide the proof or evidence of his/her skill, experience of any learning that took place in the past and to put them in the PoE.
6. 5 Once the evidence is provided, the PoE will then be submitted to the assessor who evaluate the competency of the candidate
6. 6 The competency and experience will then be matched against the standards and qualification
6. 7 Once the competencies of the candidate match the unit standards and qualification, credits or awards will be issued and the individual’s experience will be officially recognised.



Level 2 – 3 years of experience
Level 3 – 5 years of experience
Level 4 – 7 years of experience



The RPL/TRADE TEST program is currently funded by the NTA. However, candidates will be required to pay the applicable assessment fees.
